How to Measure a Bicycle Hub to Avoid Mistakes When Buying/Upgrading a Strummer Hub
The Hub Strummer is designed to be universal and can be installed on all bike brands. The most important thing to avoid getting the wrong hub is to measure the hub that is already installed on the bike. This measurement will serve as a reference when purchasing the Hub Strummer.
Recommendation: Open this page on a large screen (landscape) for easier reading (especially in the table section)
Tools and Equipment Needed:
- The bike along with the wheelset you want to measure.
- Vernier caliper / Caliper Gauge (digital type is easier to use).
Step 1: Removing the Wheelset and Checking the Wheelset Locking System
- Remove the front and rear wheelsets from the bike to obtain measurements more easily and accurately.
- Check whether your bike's wheelset locking system uses a quick release skewer or thru axle. Follow the guide according to your bike's wheelset locking system.

Measurement Guide for Bicycles with Quick Release Skewer (QR) System
- Note: this guide is suitable for quick release skewer systems with a 5 mm axle diameter.
- Measure the width of the front and rear hubs according to the image below.
- Measure the diameter of the hub end cap (the part that attaches to the frame and fork). Usually, this diameter is 9 mm for the front hub, 10 mm for the rear hub.
- Note down the size to help you purchase the right components (Example: Front Ø9x100 mm, Rear Ø10x135 mm)
- Compare the size you have obtained with the Strummer hub table below.

Measurement Guide for Thru Axle (TA) Bikes
- Measure the diameter of the front and rear thru axles. Sometimes this diameter size is already written on the axle.
- Measure the width of the front and rear hubs according to the image below.
- Note down the size to help you purchase the right components (Example: Front Ø15x110 mm, Rear Ø12x148 mm)
- Compare the size you have obtained with the Strummer hub table below.
